HCC San Jacinto Memorial Building Restoration

Houston Community College hired BRW to save a community building that had over a century of history and a positive impact on the legacy of Houston. The San Jacinto Memorial Building was one of the oldest remaining education buildings in the City of Houston and was the current centerpiece of the HCC Central Campus. The building had been adapted several times over 80 plus years with multiple additions, renovations, and modifications. BRW provided the most extensive restoration and renovation the facility had ever experienced. The over 135,000 square feet of classrooms and support spaces needed, and extensive renovation and the program was completely overhauled to provide for the needs of today’s students.

The project included the restoration of the building envelope including exterior wall systems, roof renovations and 4 building additions to provide for current building code requirements. Tower additions were strategically added to the facility to preserve the historic character of the building and allow for the design of new vertical circulation, mechanical systems, and other modern building systems. The design team at BRW worked with HCC facilities staff to support the building achieving landmark status to provide long term preservation of this historic structure.
